The festivities will combine the worlds of horticulture and architecture to form a celebration that will not be forgotten.

Can you imagine a San Francisco without a Golden Gate Bridge? It’s hard to do, but believe it or not, before the year 1937 the only way to cross the strait known as the “Golden Gate” was by ferry. The enormous and controversial project for the Bridge was taken on by the brave soul and architect Joseph B. Strauss in 1933. He sought help from architect Irving Morrow, who was responsible for the famous suspension design of the bridge, and designer Leon Moisseiff, who we all have to thank for that unmistakable orange color that stretches across the bay.

The orange color of the Bridge was chosen for multiple reasons. Initially it was selected to help the bridge stand out from its dense bed of fog. Bay Area residents also urged Moisseiff to do something that would set the Bridge apart from other works of architecture around the world. Moisseiff chose “International Orange” which has become synonymous with San Francisco.

The bridge was finally finished in 1937, measuring an astounding 230 meters in height and 1,970 meters in length. The week-long bridge opening celebrations began on May 27, with 200,000 people crossing the bridge by foot before vehicles were even allowed to cross. Mayor Angelo Rossi was the first to cross the bridge by vehicle, and the following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signaled the opening of the bridge to public traffic by pushing a button from his office in Washington, D.C.

Today, the bridge has become a worldwide symbol for the great state of California. It is now instantly recognizable and is featured in everything from literature, to cinema, to music and works of art. The San Francisco Orchid Society is happy to help celebrate the 75th anniversary of this architectural masterpiece, and the event is sure to be a colorful one, as both the Bridge and the orchids have become known for their vibrant colors and beauty. The San Francisco Orchid Society salutes the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and encourages everyone to come out and take part in this celebration of two great San Francisco traditions.

For event details visit: http://www.orchidsanfrancisco.org/poe.html

Northern California Renaissance Faire Brings a Celtic Spirit to Merry Old England

Take a moment to “Find Your Fantasy” this year at the Northern California Renaissance Faire. Shoppers can enjoy live crafting demonstrations and get many of their purchases personalized.

Guests are treated to a rare opportunity to browse among thousands of items, including jewelry, pottery, original art, sculptures, accessories, clothing, specialty foods and more. To ensure that there is a rich diversity of products at the Harvest Festivals, each vendor must go through a rigorous jury process to be chosen as a participating artist.

For 2010, the show has rolled out new promotions and prizes to add to the enjoyment of the festival. People can go online to register to win a grab bag prize that will be raffled off at the show, or once there, they can enter to win an exciting grand prize of an original piece of art by Bonnie Rochester. New this year will be a special olive oil seminar and tasting, moderated by exhibitors and expert olive growers Frank Menacho and Dewey Lucero. They will discuss how olive oils are graded and lead a tasting where attendees can experience what an award winning olive oil actually tastes like.

Once again, the San Mateo Harvest Festival has partnered with the Peninsula Youth Ballet as the official show charity. The Peninsula Youth Ballet (PYB) will receive half of the proceeds from shopping bag sales, as well as all of the donations from the parcel and bag check. The PYB will also be performing a short sneak peek of their acclaimed rendition of the classic holiday ballet, "The Nutcracker".

The Peninsula Humane Society/SPCA will also join the festivities as they host a mobile adoption center at the show. Attendees can visit the animals on Saturday and Sunday, hopefully adding a new furry member to their family.

Finally, no Harvest Festival would be complete without the exciting and eclectic entertainment that takes place throughout the weekend. Comedic juggling duo Scotty and Trink will have shoppers rolling in the aisles as they tell jokes, juggle knives and balance atop their unicycles. Tom Rigney and Flambeau will be bringing the grooves as they perform firey Cajun and zydeco two steps, funky New Orleans blues and beautiful ballads.

The San Mateo Harvest Festival takes place at the San Mateo Event Center and runs November 12 and 13 from 10am-6pm and November 14 from 10am-5pm. The duo has penned numerous cookbooks, including The Grilling Buddies Cookbook, Grillology 101, and Forever Tailgating, and their motto is "There's nothing you can't cook on a grill!"

The pair recently received national attention on CNN, ESPN and CBS for cooking 8,000 bratwurst sausages in 20-degree-below zero weather at a Green Bay Packers Game. Mad Dog and Merrill's act mixes in unique cooking ideas and recipes with a comedic and interactive delivery that enthralls the audience throughout the entire show.

Interestingly enough, Mad Dog and Merrill have been in the industry long enough to recognize significant attitude shifts and trends in grilling.

"We find that in the past five years, people are getting more adventurous with their recipes and they are willing to experiment more with their ingredients," said Mad Dog. "Plus, the concept that grilling is a 'man's domain' has softened, and we see more and more women attending our seminars and raising their hand when we ask who in the audience owns a grill.

In addition to the cooking demonstrations, there will also be an interactive seminar for the kids by Mad Science. Mad Science provides hands-on activities that teach children about science by experimenting directly with educational materials in a fun setting.

The South Bay Home Show, June 4-6 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, features a plethora of ideas and services for all facets of your living space, from appliances and cookware demonstrations to decorating and do-it-yourself projects. Two Lion Dance teams will snake their way through Downtown San Mateo, stopping at various businesses to perform a brief dance that welcomes the New Year. When the Lions have completed the dance, it’s customary to reward them with a small monetary donation to thank it for the blessing. After the Lions visit all the participating Downtown businesses, they will give a final performance at Self Help for the Elderly at 50 East 5th Avenue at 1:30 pm.

The Lion Dance is a common custom in Asian societies and is meant to symbolize good luck, fortune and prosperity. Its practice in the United States originates from the Guangdong Province and is different from the Northern Lions seen in the Beijing Opera or acrobatic performances. The lion dances usually are performed by members of gong-fu (kung-fu) schools and reflect that style. For example, in Hung Gar, the students practice very deep “horse” stances, with the power coming from twisting and rotating the waist. No matter what style, the lion movements are always feline in nature.

For a proper lion dance, the movements must match the music played by a minimum of three instruments: drum, gong and cymbal. All of the movements must be synchronized to the music and usually follow a specified sequence: for example, the 3-Star movement, then the 7-Star movement, followed by High Dance. The loud music, along with the firecrackers and staccato movements of the lion, are used to scare away “evil spirits” so that good luck will follow.

The Lion Dance is just one of the many Lunar New Year events that will be taking place in Downtown San Mateo. The day after the exciting Lion Dance performance, Sunday, February 28th from 1-4pm, Self Help for the Elderly (SHE) will participating in special event sponsored by San Mateo Public Library that features traditional musicians, crafts, Asian snacks and more. Dancers from the Shaolin Cultural Center will also perform a Lion Dance outdoor from starting at 1pm. The event is free to the public and funds raised will help support SHE and the San Mateo Public Library.

The Downtown San Mateo Lunar New Year celebration is supported by the Downtown San Mateo Association, Self-Help for the Elderly, East West Bank, New York Life Insurance and City Councilman David Lim.

WHO: Downtown San Mateo Association, Self-Help for the Elderly & Shaolin Cultural Center
WHAT: Lion Dance Performance and Lunar New Year Celebration
WHERE: Downtown San Mateo; Beginning at East West Bank at 491 S. Join one of the most respected lecturers, writers and TV personalities, Michael Weishan, at the 2010 event, where he'll be a featured speaker from January 22 - 24. The first is an overview to the history of the "Victory Garden", focusing on why it worked and how it can easily be implemented today in the Bay Area. The second is entitled “It’s All in the Plants”, and includes the importance of laying out the garden in advance. Learn what types of edible flowering annuals for beauty and flare are perfect for your own backyard while learning valuable harvesting tips. His final seminar is about “Going Green in the Garden” which will center on frugality and healthy, home grown vegetables, as well as the importance of putting the garden to bed for the year. Each one of his topics includes recycling, and planning tips made easy.

Nominated to the prestigious Garden Club of America’s National Speakers List, Weishen was also the gardening editor at Country Living for five years and host of PBS' “The Victory Garden”. He is currently the coordinator of a brand-new garden blog made popular through his website, entitled “Old House, Old Garden” which narrates the tales, tips and techniques of Traditional Gardening. He has appeared on numerous national TV programs including The Today Show, CBS Early Show, and his own weekly NPR program, The Cultivated Gardner. An honors graduate of Harvard University, Weishan is active in the Adams House Senior Common Room at his alum mater, and has published three successful books: The New Traditional Garden, From a Victorian Garden, and The Victory Garden Companion.

In addition to Weishan, the South Bay Home & Garden Show features hundreds of local home remodeling and renovation experts, lush landscaping, and a star-studded lineup of celebrities such as Anthony Gilardi of HGTV, who will be leading a series on woodworking and local kitchen and bathroom guru Steven Katkowsky, a regular on ABC-TV. Katkowsky has a dynamite presentation on how to “add up” to three times the storage space in any living area.

The all new South Bay Home & Garden Show is now proudly run by Nor Cal Events, and is certain to be the ultimate home and garden destination for the New Year. In an effort to provide Downtown San Mateo with “all the ingredients” for a progressive, eco-friendly community, the DSMA designed an event that will bring a free service to individuals and corporations that want to donate old computers while also helping to build educational and job opportunities.

“In the state of California, you aren’t legally allowed to just throw your computer out with your weekly trash pick up,” said Arnab Pal, business engagement specialist for the San Mateo County Goodwill. “You have to go through an e-waste recycling program.”

There are many incentives for recycling computers and other e-waste through Goodwill. Besides the tax write off benefit, Goodwill makes sure that donated computers are not illegally exported or end up in landfill. All the computer’s hard drives that are refurbished are wiped to the standards of the Department of Defense. Each year, through its refurbishing and recycling program, the non-profit diverts over 2 million pounds of computers, televisions and other electronics from ending up in landfills.

One of the most unique factors about the Goodwill’s e-waste recycling program is it funds Goodwill’s certified computer training programs, which creates opportunities for job training and placement for people overcoming barriers to employment.

“In the IT technician training program, people are placed as interns within Goodwill’s organization and they learn how to refurbish computers and that becomes their primary job,” said Pal. “At a time when many people are struggling with unemployment, we are thrilled to be creating green collar jobs within the local community. Plus, everyone who graduates one of the training programs gets a refurbished computer, setting the stage for their occupational success.”

Goodwill also boasts a highly involved recycling and training center, ReCompute, located in Redwood City. ReCompute recently obtained a portion of the funds from the California Green Jobs Corps, which awarded $936,429 in grants to San Mateo County. The California Green Jobs Corps opportunities offer 1,500 at-risk youth, aged 16-24, career training in energy/utilities efficiency and sustainability, green construction, green waste, agricultural and natural resources, solar power and alternative automotive fuel.

The e-waste recycling event is just another one of the green and sustainable efforts coming from the Downtown San Mateo Association. At the annual Wine Walk last June, the DSMA and the city of San Mateo reached their goal of producing zero waste at the event and are envisioning more cutting edge environmental outreach programs for 2010.

“We are proud that San Mateo County is leading the way in green initiatives here in the Bay Area,” said Kelly Mitter, Executive Director of the Downtown San Mateo Association. “In December, the Loma Prieta chapter of the Sierra Club released a report that ranked the city of San Mateo ahead of others in completing the 21 climate action ‘milestones’. We are one of the greenest cities on the Peninsula.”

WHO: Downtown San Mateo Association and Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties
WHAT: Free e-waste computer and electronics recycling event
WHERE: Downtown San Mateo Caltrain Station, 385 First Avenue, San Mateo CA, 94401
WHEN: Saturday, January 9th from 8 am – 12 Noon
INFO: Call 650-342-5520, email events@dsma.org or visit http://www.dsma.org/
PRESS: Contact Liz Stigge at 650-548-6700 or email lstigge@prmagic.com

The Downtown San Mateo Association has “All the Ingredients” to promote downtown businesses and to assist in building a responsible and sustainable community

Cream Puff Experts Bring Delicious Desserts to Downtown

Media Contact: Frances Larose/ Sofia Rodriguez
650.548.6700 / flarose@prmagic.com

Announcing Beard Papa’s new store in

              Downtown San Mateo

(San Mateo, Calif., December 2009) --- Since arriving in northern California in 2006, Beard Papa’s has been growing non-stop. The first Bay Area franchise was opened in San Francisco, then another and the concept quickly expanded to Berkeley, Cupertino, and now Downtown San Mateo.

Beard Papa’s owners, Yuan Ongpin and Luigi Cruz, have over 20 years in the restaurant industry and understand the nuisances of sophisticated consumers. The opening ribbon cutting celebration, December 18, 2009 at Beard Papa’s, 365 2nd Street in Downtown San Mateo, comes just in time for the Holidays.

Beard Papa’s has mastered the art of fresh and natural cream puffs and has successfully brought these originally Japanese treats to the northern Californian market. After Yuan Ongpin and Luigi Cruz first tasted these delicious custard and whipped cream with vanilla bean filled pastries, in Beard Papa’s New York store, they immediately fell in love with them and decided to bring them to the Bay Area. She is one of the youngest dancers to participate in the international competition and one of three American female dancers invited to participate.

We congratulate Dominique on this great opportunity to demonstrate her wonderful skills among the world's finest young dancers, and we wish her the best of luck in the competition!

San Mateo Harvest Festival is Back After a Successful First Year

The San Mateo Harvest Festival is returning to the San Mateo Event Center on November 13-15 after a successful run in 2008, which was the first year the show had moved to the Peninsula from San Francisco. Marius Petipa choreographed the first ballet based on Alexandre Dumas adaptation of the story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The first performance was held in December 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since then, the ballet became a Christmas tradition, becoming one of the most popular ballets of all time. Its universal appeal has been attributed to the popularity of its timeless characters and the beautifully intricate choreography, costumes, and set design.

According to PYB president Frankie Briones, “I believe our rendition of the performance is so successful because of Ayako Takahashi’s amazing ability to choreograph all her dancers in a way that brings out their abilities and strengths as dancers. She combines professional dancers with amateurs, fine tuning each scene in order to provide the audience with a captivating experience. The final scene is stunning, especially when the flying sleigh sweeps across the stage.”

The PYB’s Nutcracker has been featured on KGO TV Ch. 7’s “View from the Bay” and in 2007 it was rated as the second best Nutcracker in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Examiner. This year’s performance will also be excellent, especially with the amazing list of professional guest dancers: Jekyns Pelaez from Diablo Ballet as the Cavalier; Mariko Takahashi from the Oakland Ballet and Moving Arts as the Sugar Plum Fairy; Joseph Copley from the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company as the Prince; and, Juan Pazmino as Drosselmeyer. This is one Nutcracker you won’t want to miss.

“For nearly 20 years, I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of professional and amateur dancers,” said Ayako Takahashi, PYB’s artistic director. “I am always amazed at the immense talent here on the Peninsula. These performers come alive on stage and use their talents to keep audiences enthralled year after year.”

Shortly after each 2:00 pm matinee performance, children will be able to meet the characters from the “Sugar Plum Kingdom” at “Clara’s Tea Party”, which includes cookies, punch, a photo with a favorite character and a surprise gift.

Who: The Peninsula Youth Ballet
What: The 2009 Nutcracker ballet performance
When: November 28th and 29th / December 5th and 6th, 2009
Where: San Mateo Performing Arts Center, 600 North Delaware St., San Mateo
Time: 2:00 pm
Ticket Prices: Orchestra: Adult $35.00 and Senior/Child $25.00
Balcony and Orchestra Side: Adult $25.00 and Senior/Child $15.00
Clara’s Tea Party: $12.00 per person
Info and Tickets: Online at www.pyb.org or call 650.631.3767 / Discounts available for groups

Largest Indoor Arts and Craft Show on the West Coast Arrives in Long Beach
Long Beach Harvest Festival features hundreds of exhibitors and over 24,000 handmade arts and crafts

(Long Beach, Calif., September 2009) --- The Harvest Festival Original Art and Craft Show®, the largest indoor arts and crafts show on the West Coast, returns to the Long Beach Convention Center October 2-4, 2009 with unique products, eclectic entertainers and a full day of fun.

For over 37 years, the Harvest Festival’s unique shopping and entertainment atmosphere has thrilled customers in California and beyond. Over the years, she has maintained her strategic focus on how to keep her 10 Peninsula Beauty stores in the forefront of consumers, grasping every opportunity to increase and enrich product selection while providing an enjoyable shopping experience. Mayor Keighran will cut the ribbon to the new store at 5:30 pm, introducing the community to entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and bubbly. The new store is just one of the many enhancements that Lori is introducing throughout her 50th anniversary’s SALE-abration.

According to Lori Silverstein, CEO of Peninsula Beauty, “Our company offers a long history of fairly priced, high-quality beauty products. We have grown up with our customers, and thrive on the ability to help them preserve their inner and outer beauty. People today are looking for a reliable foundation that will enable them to feel good and prosper, now and into the future.” Concludes Lori with a twinkle in her eye and a smile: “There is no time for ‘bad hair’ days.”

The new Burlingame store will be kicking off Peninsula Beauty’s two month 50th SALE-abration, slated to take place at each of the stores. Throughout October and November, EVERY location will be offering in-store specials, scratchers and unique one-of-a-kind specialty items.

For many years, Lori has proudly supported Peninsula communities through donations and good solid business offering. Now, she is proud to extend her gratitude to her loyal customers and new customers by offering these amazing specials. So stop by any of the Peninsula Beauty locations and indulge yourself in all the new, trendy lines of products.

WHAT: Peninsula Beauty’s New Burlingame Store Opening / Ribbon Cutting
50th Year Anniversary SALE –abration (by invitation only)
WHY: In celebration of the new Burlingame store and the company’s 50th anniversary.
WHEN: September 24, 2009 (5-7 pm, with ribbon cutting at 5:30 by Mayor Keighran).
INFO: For more info on Peninsula Beauty, the new store and their special promotions in October and November, go to http://www.peninsulabeauty.com/

Peninsula Youth Ballet Nutcracker Auditions

The Peninsula Youth Ballet to Hold Casting Call for the 2009 “Nutcracker”
Announcing Auditions Schedule for Fairy Tale Holiday Ballet

Youth and aspiring dancers in the Bay Area are invited to become a part of this season’s classic ballet, the “Nutcracker”. Since then, the event has seen a lot of changes and been replicated in cities throughout the United States. The NorCalRenFaire, which used to be held at Black Point in Novato, is acclaimed as the only one of its kind to be owned and operated by its own performers, many of whom have been participating for over 30 years.

This weekend only, we're happy to announce that kids 12 and under will be given free admission to kick off the season in true Renaissance style! Next weekend, 9/13 and 9/14, presents the Pirate Invasion, where Sir Francis Drake himself will roam the crowds looking for the next young rogue to join his crew. The best dressed privateers will be invited to meet the one and only Queen Elizabeth, who as always, will be dressed in all her finery.

Celtic Weekend takes place on the 20th and 21st of the month, where you'll find many a man in a kilt, as well as live performances from modern Celtic band, Tempest.

Each weekend is filled with the mischief and mayhem that Faire-goers have come to know and love over the years, and gives everyone a chance to discover the Elizabethan spirit within! From an adult playground to a living history, this event has everything that one could hope for in the balmy months of Indian Summer. Don't miss out on the chance to experience the true Northern California Renaissance Faire - visit us at http://www.norcalrenfaire.com/ for advance tickets, which include a $5 discount!

Huzzah!

First Post of 2008

Welcome to the first official post from The Larose Group, aka PR Magic. We've decided to create a blog on behalf of our clients for several reasons, the first of which is to keep everyone updated on their many goings-on that occur throughout the year.

It probably seems like we're starting our blog late in the year, though summertime is actually the busiest season for us. Junior Giants baseball, which is the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, starts gearing up as early as March and peaks in July and August. September brings the Northern California Renaissance Faire (opening on the 6th), the Harvest Festival Original Arts & Crafts Shows (seven of which we're proud to represent) and the Dickens House Design Tour. Come October, you'll see the International Vintage Poster Fair and the Dickens House Holiday Shopping Boutique, while November introduces the start of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of American wines in the world.

Needless to say, we are always busy here at The Larose Group. We consider ourselves lucky enough to partner with an amazing group of individuals and organizations, which makes this time of year even more exciting.
