Bay Area Travel & Adventure Show Sets Sail for Santa Clara

With so many vacation destinations around the world, it may be difficult trying to even just pinpoint the best places to go, but now, it doesn’t have to be.

The Bay Area Travel & Adventure show is coming to the Santa Clara Convention Center, February 18-19, 2012, to make it easier for aspiring travelers to plan their perfect getaway. The show features a multitude of travel resources and information, seminars with celebrity guest speakers, hands-on activities, a Global Beats dance stage and more – all under one roof.

Over 150 destination experts and tour operators will present the thousands of options available in traveling. In addition, a number of the exhibitors are doing giveaways, ranging from gift certificates to trips, as well as providing show-exclusive discounts.

Celebrity guest speakers, such as Patricia Schultz and Rick Steves, will lead informative seminars on the Travel & Adventure Stage. Schultz, bestselling author of the 1,000 Places to See Before You Die series, and Rick Steves, TV personality and author, will share their travel tips and experiences and sign copies of their books following the seminars. Rick Steves is known for his bestselling guidebook series and will discuss practical, money-saving ins and outs of independent travel. Other speakers include travel photographer Ralph Velasco and celebrity travel expert Mark DeCarlo.

DeCarlo will hold an interactive cooking class and competition on the Fiery Foods Stage, as food plays a big part in traveling. Three audience members will be chosen from a drawing to recreate a dish right on the spot based on DeCarlo’s decision. The winner, determined by the audience, wins an exhilarating, all-inclusive vacation.

On the same stage, unique flavors from around the world will be showcased as well. Local chefs will cook traditional “hot” dishes as part of the Fiery Foods Challenge in hopes of the audience choosing theirs as the favorite.

Travel & Adventure Show attendees can take part in hands-on activities that may be found at some travel destinations as well, including rock-climbing and zip-lining. All activities, included in admission fee, are available for any skill level or age.

2012 Pacific Orchid Exposition: A Salute to the Golden Gate

It isn’t every year that the largest orchid exhibition in the US shares an important anniversary with one of the most famous works of architecture; but, 2012 is one such year.

On February 23-26, 2012, the San Francisco Orchid Society’s 60th annual Pacific Orchid Exposition (POE) will coincide with the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. The festivities will combine the worlds of horticulture and architecture to form a celebration that will not be forgotten.

Can you imagine a San Francisco without a Golden Gate Bridge? It’s hard to do, but believe it or not, before the year 1937 the only way to cross the strait known as the “Golden Gate” was by ferry. The enormous and controversial project for the Bridge was taken on by the brave soul and architect Joseph B. Strauss in 1933. He sought help from architect Irving Morrow, who was responsible for the famous suspension design of the bridge, and designer Leon Moisseiff, who we all have to thank for that unmistakable orange color that stretches across the bay.

The orange color of the Bridge was chosen for multiple reasons. Initially it was selected to help the bridge stand out from its dense bed of fog. Bay Area residents also urged Moisseiff to do something that would set the Bridge apart from other works of architecture around the world. Moisseiff chose “International Orange” which has become synonymous with San Francisco.

The bridge was finally finished in 1937, measuring an astounding 230 meters in height and 1,970 meters in length. The week-long bridge opening celebrations began on May 27, with 200,000 people crossing the bridge by foot before vehicles were even allowed to cross. Mayor Angelo Rossi was the first to cross the bridge by vehicle, and the following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signaled the opening of the bridge to public traffic by pushing a button from his office in Washington, D.C.

Today, the bridge has become a worldwide symbol for the great state of California. It is now instantly recognizable and is featured in everything from literature, to cinema, to music and works of art. The San Francisco Orchid Society is happy to help celebrate the 75th anniversary of this architectural masterpiece, and the event is sure to be a colorful one, as both the Bridge and the orchids have become known for their vibrant colors and beauty. The San Francisco Orchid Society salutes the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and encourages everyone to come out and take part in this celebration of two great San Francisco traditions.

The city of Mountain View and Engage as You Age, LLC are sponsoring a free Senior Care 101 workshop on Saturday, September 10th at 1:00pm. The workshop will explore the physical, financial and psychological issues associated with elder care, as well as provide tips and resources on how to navigate the difficulties of the aging process.

Burlingame ArtzFest Entertainment Steals the Show

The Burlingame ArtzFest, happening August 13-14th on Burlingame Avenue, has announced a thrilling music line up for its 2011 event, mixing in everything from local up-and-comers to well seasoned professionals.

On Saturday, August 13th, electricity will fill the air as Livewire, a high-energy 6 piece dance cover band, light up the stage. Based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Livewire is known as an in-demand party band that has played at top clubs, including Bimbo's 365 Clib, Cache Creek Casino Resort, the Red Devil Lounge, and Harry Denton's Starlight Room.
Livewire covers everything from Journey to the Jackson 5, showcasing an eclectic mix of the best songs from the 70's and 80's.

Hitting the stage next are the Hitmen, a unique 7-piece band that mixes thier abilities and experience to push musical boundries. The group plays a variety of hits from the 70's to modern day favorites for over 14 years. The Hittmen have performed their high energy dance music at benefits, festivals, concenrts, nightclubs and private functions, and they've performed with notable musicians such as Santana, the Ohio Players, Tower of Power and Cameo.

On Sunday, August 14th, get ready to turn up the head as Lava adds a little spice to the ArtzFest stage. Lava is a 9-piece band covering a wide range of genres, including Latin Jazz, Cha-Cha-Cha, Latin Rock, Latin Funk and Salsa. The group features the extraordinary percussionist, Mio "Timbalero" Flores, who has worked and/or collaborated with artists such as Santana, Palo, Sanchez and War.

Because of its popularity last year, the ArtzFest is bringing back its community stage which will feature a myriad of local performers and talent. The Burlingame Bollywood Dancers and the Millbrae Dance Academy will showcase uniqe dance routines, and local band "Group Therapy" is slated to play sets of their adult soft rock songs. Many of the "Burlingame Idol" finalists and winners will also grace the stage throughout the weekend, and the Burlingame Community Theater Troupe will have everyone in stitches with "The Punny Show" - a theatrical experience based on puns.

On Saturday, from 1:30-2:00 pm there will be a very special performance by Sara Oromchi, the 2009 Burlingame Idol winner. Oromchi was recently a contestant on NBC's new hit reality show, "The Voice".

Local Young Artists Raise Money For Tsunami Relief

Two award winning Bay Area teenage artists have raised over $800 for victims of the Japan tsunami and earthquake through the sales of their artwork.

Philip Liao, Jr. and Alberta Liao (pictured with Bay Area Red Cross CEO Harold Brooks) gained national praise after their pieces were showcased at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They will be holding an art show at the Foster City Art Gallery through the end of March and wanted to help the relief efforts in Japan and decided to donate 100% of their sales to the Bay Area Red Cross.

San Mateo Harvest Festival Heats Up the Crisp Autumn Days

The San Mateo Harvest Festival will add a little warmth to those cold November days as it brings a trove of treasures and treats to the San Mateo Event Center November 12-14, 2010.

The Harvest Festivals are the largest indoor arts and crafts show on the west coast, showcasing over 24,000 unique gifts, all handcrafted in the USA.

The shows began 38 years ago, and today loyal attendees continue to flock to this fall festival for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Shoppers can enjoy live crafting demonstrations and get many of their purchases personalized.

Hassan is one of the Bay Area's most sought-after young landscape designers, and not just because he is a local area native. With over 20 years experience in the field of lanscaping and home improvement, Hassan is a licensed contractor and certified landscape technician who believes that a great home starts with a solid lanscape. Special Lion Dance Featuring Shaolin Cultural Center and Gee Yung Lion Dance Association

Two Lion Dance teams will snake their way through Downtown San Mateo, stopping at various businesses to perform a brief dance that welcomes the New Year. When the Lions have completed the dance, it’s customary to reward them with a small monetary donation to thank it for the blessing. After the Lions visit all the participating Downtown businesses, they will give a final performance at Self Help for the Elderly at 50 East 5th Avenue at 1:30 pm.

The Lion Dance is a common custom in Asian societies and is meant to symbolize good luck, fortune and prosperity. Its practice in the United States originates from the Guangdong Province and is different from the Northern Lions seen in the Beijing Opera or acrobatic performances. The lion dances usually are performed by members of gong-fu (kung-fu) schools and reflect that style. For example, in Hung Gar, the students practice very deep “horse” stances, with the power coming from twisting and rotating the waist. No matter what style, the lion movements are always feline in nature.

For a proper lion dance, the movements must match the music played by a minimum of three instruments: drum, gong and cymbal. All of the movements must be synchronized to the music and usually follow a specified sequence: for example, the 3-Star movement, then the 7-Star movement, followed by High Dance. The loud music, along with the firecrackers and staccato movements of the lion, are used to scare away “evil spirits” so that good luck will follow.

The Lion Dance is just one of the many Lunar New Year events that will be taking place in Downtown San Mateo. The day after the exciting Lion Dance performance, Sunday, February 28th from 1-4pm, Self Help for the Elderly (SHE) will participating in special event sponsored by San Mateo Public Library that features traditional musicians, crafts, Asian snacks and more. Dancers from the Shaolin Cultural Center will also perform a Lion Dance outdoor from starting at 1pm. The event is free to the public and funds raised will help support SHE and the San Mateo Public Library.

Downtown San Mateo Association Announces Winners of "Christmas in the Windows" Contest

On Thursday, January 28th at 3pm, the Downtown San Mateo Association will recognize the winners of the “Christmas in the Windows” contest that benefited local non-profit HIP Housing, in addition to several other community organizations.

In December, the Downtown San Mateo Association (DSMA) launched a new holiday event called “Christmas in the Windows” designed to bring more foot traffic to the Downtown business district and support local community groups while adding festive Holiday cheer to the storefronts.

21 Downtown businesses took part in the contest by decorating a Christmas tree with an “All The Ingredients” theme. Most of the businesses partnered with artists or community organizations and pledged to donate winnings to the charity which helped decorate the tree. The contest was judged and voted on by members of the public who visited Downtown San Mateo during the month of December.

Downtown San Mateo Association Partners with Goodwill for E-waste Drive

On Saturday, January 9th, from 8 a.m. – noon, the Downtown San Mateo Association and Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties will host an e-waste drive at the downtown San Mateo Caltrain station. In an effort to provide Downtown San Mateo with “all the ingredients” for a progressive, eco-friendly community, the DSMA designed an event that will bring a free service to individuals and corporations that want to donate old computers while also helping to build educational and job opportunities.

“In the state of California, you aren’t legally allowed to just throw your computer out with your weekly trash pick up,” said Arnab Pal, business engagement specialist for the San Mateo County Goodwill. “You have to go through an e-waste recycling program.”

There are many incentives for recycling computers and other e-waste through Goodwill. Besides the tax write off benefit, Goodwill makes sure that donated computers are not illegally exported or end up in landfill. All the computer’s hard drives that are refurbished are wiped to the standards of the Department of Defense. Each year, through its refurbishing and recycling program, the non-profit diverts over 2 million pounds of computers, televisions and other electronics from ending up in landfills.

One of the most unique factors about the Goodwill’s e-waste recycling program is it funds Goodwill’s certified computer training programs, which creates opportunities for job training and placement for people overcoming barriers to employment.

“In the IT technician training program, people are placed as interns within Goodwill’s organization and they learn how to refurbish computers and that becomes their primary job,” said Pal. “At a time when many people are struggling with unemployment, we are thrilled to be creating green collar jobs within the local community. Plus, everyone who graduates one of the training programs gets a refurbished computer, setting the stage for their occupational success.”

Goodwill also boasts a highly involved recycling and training center, ReCompute, located in Redwood City. ReCompute recently obtained a portion of the funds from the California Green Jobs Corps, which awarded $936,429 in grants to San Mateo County. The California Green Jobs Corps opportunities offer 1,500 at-risk youth, aged 16-24, career training in energy/utilities efficiency and sustainability, green construction, green waste, agricultural and natural resources, solar power and alternative automotive fuel.

The e-waste recycling event is just another one of the green and sustainable efforts coming from the Downtown San Mateo Association. At the annual Wine Walk last June, the DSMA and the city of San Mateo reached their goal of producing zero waste at the event and are envisioning more cutting edge environmental outreach programs for 2010.

“We are proud that San Mateo County is leading the way in green initiatives here in the Bay Area,” said Kelly Mitter, Executive Director of the Downtown San Mateo Association. “In December, the Loma Prieta chapter of the Sierra Club released a report that ranked the city of San Mateo ahead of others in completing the 21 climate action ‘milestones’. We are one of the greenest cities on the Peninsula.”

Comedian John Park joins the festival entertainment line-up

The Ayako School of Ballet is proud to announce that one of their students, Dominique Larose, has been invited to participate in the 2010 Prix de Lausanne. It's a great honor to be given the opportunity of being a part of one of the world's most prestigious dance competitions. It is held in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will take place on January 26 - 31, 2010.

Dominique is 14 years old, and will turn 15 just in time to compete in the 2010 Prix de Lausanne. She won the honor of top senior ballet dancer in the spring of 2009 in each of the following ballet competitions: the ADA (American Dance Association), IDC (International Dance Competition) and Showstoppers. She was also invited to an international competition in New York to dance and compete at YAGP (Youth American Grand Prix), where she demonstrated her skills in front of 4,500 people at both the New York Center and the Lincoln Center. A dancer since the age of three, Dominique has been dancing under Ayako Takahashi's direction for the past nine years.

Dominique is very excited and honored to be invited to the Prix de Lausanne. She is one of the youngest dancers to participate in the international competition and one of three American female dancers invited to participate.

The Peninsula Youth Ballet (PYB) will be presenting the holiday classic, the “Nutcracker”, with performances held on November 28th and 29th and December 5th and 6th, 2009 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center, 600 North Delaware St in San Mateo.

The Nutcracker is a fairytale ballet composed in 1891-1892 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Marius Petipa choreographed the first ballet based on Alexandre Dumas adaptation of the story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The first performance was held in December 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since then, the ballet became a Christmas tradition, becoming one of the most popular ballets of all time. Its universal appeal has been attributed to the popularity of its timeless characters and the beautifully intricate choreography, costumes, and set design.

According to PYB president Frankie Briones, “I believe our rendition of the performance is so successful because of Ayako Takahashi’s amazing ability to choreograph all her dancers in a way that brings out their abilities and strengths as dancers. She combines professional dancers with amateurs, fine tuning each scene in order to provide the audience with a captivating experience. The final scene is stunning, especially when the flying sleigh sweeps across the stage.”

The PYB’s Nutcracker has been featured on KGO TV Ch. 7’s “View from the Bay” and in 2007 it was rated as the second best Nutcracker in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Examiner. This year’s performance will also be excellent, especially with the amazing list of professional guest dancers: Jekyns Pelaez from Diablo Ballet as the Cavalier; Mariko Takahashi from the Oakland Ballet and Moving Arts as the Sugar Plum Fairy; Joseph Copley from the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company as the Prince; and, Juan Pazmino as Drosselmeyer. This is one Nutcracker you won’t want to miss.

“For nearly 20 years, I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of professional and amateur dancers,” said Ayako Takahashi, PYB’s artistic director. “I am always amazed at the immense talent here on the Peninsula. These performers come alive on stage and use their talents to keep audiences enthralled year after year.”

Shortly after each 2:00 pm matinee performance, children will be able to meet the characters from the “Sugar Plum Kingdom” at “Clara’s Tea Party”, which includes cookies, punch, a photo with a favorite character and a surprise gift.

Announcing Auditions Schedule for Fairy Tale Holiday Ballet

Youth and aspiring dancers in the Bay Area are invited to become a part of this season’s classic ballet, the “Nutcracker”. The Peninsula Youth Ballet (PYB) is looking for dancers to perform in this classic holiday favorite, composed by Tchaikovsky. Everyone interested in participating has the chance to audition on Sunday, September 13th at the Ayako School of Ballet, 517 Marin View, in Belmont. Auditions for children between the ages of 8 and 10 are scheduled for 1pm; ages 11-13 at 2:00 pm; and, 14 – 19 at 3:00 pm. All dancers who are on pointe, should bring their own pointe shoes. Junior members from 5 – 7 years old need to call for special audition day, either the end of September or early October. (tbd).

Dancers from 8 to 19 years of age are welcome to demonstrate their dancing skills as part of the cast for the PYB’s “Nutcracker”, a performance that has been rated as the second best “Nutcracker” in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Examiner.

On September 11-13, the Pleasanton Harvest Festival will return to the Alameda County Fairgrounds, featuring the best and most unique shopping, exciting entertainment and delicious food.

Downtown San Mateo has “All the Ingredients” to Cure Those Summertime Blues

For many people, summertime equals down time and many Bay Area residents are looking for fun, inexpensive ways to keep busy. Downtown San Mateo offers just the thing; the Central Park Music Series is a free weekly concert series happening every Thursday night, from 6-8 pm. The event is a great way for individuals and families to cool off in the warm summer evenings by listening to hot musical performances.

“The Central Park Music Series is a favorite among many people of San Mateo and the Peninsula in general,” said Kelly Mitter, Executive Director of the Downtown San Mateo Association. “At every concert you’ll find families sprawled out on picnic blankets and people dancing to the music. The City of San Mateo wanted to provide a line-up that offers a different and unique musical genre every week, so we can safely say there really is something for everyone.”

At each concert there are raffle drawings, with gift certificates and donations provided by local Downtown San Mateo merchants. Many of the 130 Downtown restaurants offer specials and to-go boxes for customers to enjoy while watching the performances.

On June 26th, from 5:30-9:00 pm, Downtown San Mateo will burst with flavor and sophistication as the 14th annual Wine Walk returns to the city on the Peninsula with “All the Ingredients”.

There will also be two main stages offering exciting live music and entertainment throughout the evening.

2009 marks the 14th anniversary of the Wine Walk, and it has grown to be one of the premiere summer events in the Bay Area. For the second year, Third Avenue, located in the heart of Downtown, will be closed to create a spacious wine garden. This weekend, April 17-19, the brand new Pleasanton Spring Harvest Festival comes to the Alameda County Fairgrounds to bring a weekend of shopping, music, and fun to residents all over the bay Area.

This is the first time in six years that the Harvest Festival have offered a spring show, and becuase of the great response for the fall show, the management chose Pleasanton as the host city. Downtown San Mateo Springs into a New Brand Identity

25th Annual Marin Show: Art of the Americas

On February 21 and 22nd, the Marin Show: Art of the Americas will celebrate its 25th anniversary as the largest event of its kind, and has been referred to as the "Superbowl" of Native American Art collecting.

The show will feature over 200 dealers and artists selling antique American Indian, Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, and Contemporary American Indian Art. All types of mediums will be represented, including pottery, textiles, sculpture, jewelry, beadwork, baskets, paintings, photography and more.

Inspired by famed author Charles Dickens, the Dickens House Hoilday Boutique transforms this year's home into a shopping extravaganza to support St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School. Guests will be able to stroll through the house, admire the work of the Dickens House designers and shop for unique holiday gifts displayed throughout the rooms.

Designers, parents and volunteers donate their time and resources each year to the Dickens House Fundraiser. In addition to being a fabulous shopping experience, the Dickens House provides an opportunity for the community to come together and share the Holiday Spirit.

The Dickens House, currently celebrating its 20th Anniversary, attracts an average of 5,000 visitors each year. Show dates and hours are listed below:

2008 International Vintage Poster Fair Lets You Decide

This Friday, October 24th, the International Vintage Poster Fair returns to San Francisco with a very timely theme - "Politically Correct? / Politically Incorrect?" An annual event featuring over 10,000 original vetted vintage posters, the IVPF will introduce visitors to a series of provacative, occasionally controversial images, in addition to the ever popular artwork of food and liquor advertisements, travel and transportation, film, and sports.

The 2008 exhibition is slated for the 24th through the 26th at Fort Mason Center, Landmark Building A in the beautiful city by the Bay. A $15 ticket allows entrance all weekend long, and grants guests the opportunity to rediscover the evolution of advertising and propaganda over the past 100 - 200 years.

Posters are for both show and sale, ranging from $200 to $50,000, and are presented by world-class exhibitors from the United States, Canada, China, Israel, and Western Europe.

To the left you'll see a piece by Tomi Ungerer, a famous political poster designer in the 1960s who challenged the idea of power under racial control. At the time, the item was a testament to the civil rights movement and acts of desegregation taking place in the US; named "Black Power / White Power", the poster continues to be a piece of social controversy today, and is indicative of the artwork you'll witness at the International Vintage Poster Fair.

The show opens at 5pm on Friday, and lasts until 9pm; Saturday hours are 10am through 7pm, and Sunday hours are 11am until 6pm.

Frances & Crystal Shawanda at the 2008 Long Beach Harvest Festival

This past weekend, our Principal and the Founder of The Larose Group, LLC had the honor of meeting up-and-coming country artist Crystal Shawanda at the Harvest Festival Original Art & Craft Show in Long Beach.

Crystal, who was prominently featured and applauded in the September 22nd issue of People Magazine for her new album, "Dawn of a New Day", was one of the premier performers at the event, held October 17th through the 19th.

With her beautiful singing voice and Native American roots, Crystal crosses cultural, musical, and spiritual boundaries, and was a huge part in the success of this year's Long Beach Harvest Festival.

The Harvest Festival Original Art and Craft Shows® are one of the best one-stop shopping destinations around, and this fall, they are returning to a city near you! Huzzah for the NorCalRenFaire!

It's September 3rd, which means we are mere days away from an event that is very special to us at The Larose Group, the Northern California Renaissance Faire. Every year, thousands of
people flock to Casa de Fruta in Hollister to celebrate the Harvest and

enjoy one of the most unique events in the Bay Area and beyond; this year, the festivities start on Saturday, September 6th, and come to an end on Sunday, October 12th.

The Northern California Renaissance Faire stems from the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire, which began in Los Angeles during the 1960s. Since then, the event has seen a lot of changes and been replicated in cities throughout the United States. The NorCalRenFaire, which used to be held at Black Point in Novato, is acclaimed as the only one of its kind to be owned and operated by its own performers, many of whom have been participating for over 30 years.

This weekend only, we're happy to announce that kids 12 and under will be given free admission to kick off the season in true Renaissance style! Next weekend, 9/13 and 9/14, presents the Pirate Invasion, where Sir Francis Drake himself will roam the crowds looking for the next young rogue to join his crew. The best dressed privateers will be invited to meet the one and only Queen Elizabeth, who as always, will be dressed in all her finery.

Celtic Weekend takes place on the 20th and 21st of the month, where you'll find many a man in a kilt, as well as live performances from modern Celtic band, Tempest.

Each weekend is filled with the mischief and mayhem that Faire-goers have come to know and love over the years, and gives everyone a chance to discover the Elizabethan spirit within! First Post of 2008

Welcome to the first official post from The Larose Group, aka PR Magic. We've decided to create a blog on behalf of our clients for several reasons, the first of which is to keep everyone updated on their many goings-on that occur throughout the year.

It probably seems like we're starting our blog late in the year, though summertime is actually the busiest season for us. Junior Giants baseball, which is the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, starts gearing up as early as March and peaks in July and August. September brings the Northern California Renaissance Faire (opening on the 6th), the Harvest Festival Original Arts & Crafts Shows (seven of which we're proud to represent) and the Dickens House Design Tour. Come October, you'll see the International Vintage Poster Fair and the Dickens House Holiday Shopping Boutique, while November introduces the start of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of American wines in the world.

Needless to say, we are always busy here at The Larose Group. We consider ourselves lucky enough to partner with an amazing group of individuals and organizations, which makes this time of year even more exciting.
